Why Accounting Automation Usually Fails

Automation is high on nearly every finance leader’s agenda. That makes sense. Finance and accounting teams are under pressure to move faster, reduce manual work, improve consistency, and create capacity without simply adding headcount. The hidden failure point is exception handling

Automation works best when the process is predictable. Accounting work often is not.

There are duplicate transactions, unusual vendor invoices, timing issues, mapping errors, policy questions, one-off requests, and exceptions that do not fit the standard logic the workflow was built around.

Many automation projects get framed internally as speed initiatives.

For accounting teams, that is not enough.

Software is not the operating model

Finance teams are under real pressure to modernize. But software alone does not create an operating model.
